Windham – A woman who police say caused a five-car pileup by stopping to save a turtle on Interstate 93 over the weekend will likely not be charged unless someone comes forward with information.
The only thing state police know about the woman is that she drove away in a silver car after causing the crash, which sent two people to area hospitals, New Hampshire State Police Trooper Nick Cyr said yesterday.
He said he still hopes to find out who the woman was, but added that there’s not much investigators can do to find her unless they get more leads. If they do find her, she would be charged with reckless conduct because she endangered the lives of other people, he said.
“It’s awfully tough,” Cyr said of trying to track her down.
The woman stopped in the left lane of I-93 South late Saturday afternoon near the Derry line. Witnesses told police they saw her trying to rescue a turtle that was crossing highway.
Drivers behind the woman slammed on their brakes, and two were able to come to a stop. But they were then struck by two other cars, which were then hit by three more cars. The woman then fled the scene, police said.
Two drivers — Devin LeBlanc of Londonderry and Catherine George of Salem — suffered minor injuries in the accident, and were treated at area hospitals. Cyr said the crash could have been deadly. It’s illegal for anyone to stop on the highway unless there’s an emergency, he said.
“A turtle crossing the highway, I don’t think would cut it,” Cyr said.
Cyr said anyone with information about the woman can call the New Hampshire State Police, Troop B, in Milford at 672-3333."
They Never did say if the turtle was O.K.......
